Aftercare

When appropriate we use Recovery Derm clear film. Recovery Derm Shield is a light, waterproof composite film bandage comprised of three layers: EVA film, matte PU film, and glassine. The matte PU film, which is the part of the bandage that remains on and protects the skin after tattooing, allows for optimal breathability and ductility.

Leave in place for 3 to 7 days depending on exultation (your people juice filling the bandage of the tattoo).

Additional Information

  • Leave Derm Shield in place for 3-7 days
  • In the first 24 hours, there may be a build up of plasma under the Derm Shield This is completely normal. If so, remove the bandage and reapply a new clean one. Once you remove our SecondSkin™ bandage, keep your tattoo clean and start using our aftercare cream as needed.
  • You may experience some redness around the tattoo where Derm Shield was applied to the un-tattooed skin. This is also completely normal and may occur with any type of medical adhesive. If you do develop an adverse reaction on the tattoo, discontinue use immediately.

Removal

  1. Peel up an edge or corner of Derm Shield. If this proves difficult, you can attach medical tape to the corner of the film to help lift it.
  2. Slowly pull the film off. Do not pull it straight up away from the skin. Instead, pull the film back and across the skin while holding your skin taut.

If the tattoo is in an awkward area and a derm shield cannot be used or if you remove the derm shield early follow these instructions...

Standard Aftercare;

Remove initial bandage after 2-3 hours with clean hands. Wash your tattoo with Anti-bacterial soap with your bare hands only. Gently pat dry with clean paper towels. Apply a very thin layer of ointment (artist will recommend one) to the entire tattoo. DO NOT USE...Neosporin, Bacitracin, petroleum jelly as they may clog pores and cause allergic reactions and/or infection.

Clean your new tattoo 2 times a day with anti-bacterial soap followed up with fresh ointment for about 5 days.

After that use unscented white lotion several times a day for the next 2 weeks.

DO NOT SCRATCH OR PICK AT YOUR TATTOO.

KEEP YOUR TATTOO OUT OF THE SUN.

DO NOT SOAK YOUR TATTOO.

KEEP YOUR TATTOO CLEAN AND IT WILL KEEP YOU HAPPY.

THE PETROLEUM DEBATE

It's crucial to examine the composition of all products put on an open wound on the skin, as it’s likely that whatever you’re putting on a fresh tattoo is going to be absorbed into the body. This is problematic with many ingredients and chemicals, but particularly with petroleum on tattoos. The concerns with petroleum-based products, especially in a process that involves skin penetration, include:

1. Toxicity: Petroleum jelly is contaminated with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)(link opens in new tab/window), which have raised a lot of concern due to their carcinogenic effects.
2. Healing Hindrance: Vaseline creates an overly occlusive layer on the skin, hindering the necessary breathability for optimal healing. It traps excess moisture under the skin, which can lead to scabbing, saturation loss, and pimples.
3. Skin Reactions: Many individuals develop reactions to petroleum-based products, due primarily to either allergies or the harsh nature of petroleum, leading to skin irritation or exacerbating existing skin conditions

Emerging Research on Petroleum and Wound Healing

New research indicates that petroleum-based products may not be as great an option for wound healing as once thought. Some research has indicated that these products create too thick of a barrier on the skin. This barrier then traps heat and potentially bacteria, hindering the skin's ability to breathe and recover efficiently.

Moreover, such an environment can disrupt the delicate balance needed for the wound healing process, potentially leading to exacerbated inflammation and delayed recovery.

Beyond the immediate risks of infection and irritation, the long-term implications of using petroleum on tattoos have also raised significant health concerns, particularly regarding its carcinogenic properties.

Petroleum products have been shown to be contaminated with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), a group of chemicals that occur naturally in coal, crude oil, and gasoline - which have been classified as carcinogenic to humans.

While the amount of PAHs in petroleum-based products is typically low, their application on open wounds poses a risk as these compounds can be more easily absorbed into the bloodstream. This absorption can lead to an accumulation of toxic substances in the body, raising concerns about long-term health risks, including cancer. These potential hazards underscore the importance of choosing safer, non-petroleum-based alternatives for tattoo aftercare and wound treatment, to ensure both immediate and long-term skin health.

Do you take walk-ins?

We do take walk-ins.

Walk-ins are accepted on a first come, first serve basis and only if there is an available artist to accommodate.

We understand that tattoos and piercings can have spontaneity and we will do our best to be able to honor them, however, the best way to get the attention and time you deserve is to make an appointment 1 to 4 weeks in advance. If it simply must be done immediately call first so as not to waste a trip. This is especially true on Saturdays and especially for piercings as our Piercer also tattoos.

Tattoos and piercings are intense procedures that take time. It can be difficult to be exact when estimating how long one might take. The client in our chair deserves exactly what you deserve. Our undivided attention.
